Every year at 8.30pm on the last Saturday of March, Earth Hour supporters in over 190 countries and territories unite – taking action on and raising awareness of the issues facing our one planet.
In keeping, MasterChef South Africa hosted a delicious Earth Hour Dinner at Maker’s Landing at Cape Town V&A Waterfront on 26 March, 2022.
The dinner was prepared by Chef Mmabatho Molefe (@mmab_atho) and Chef Bertus Basson (@bertusbasson), and the canapés were served on ‘Shellegance’ by Lucie De Moyencourt (@shellegance / lucie.in.wonderlands).
Earth Hour Dinner
The Masterchefs whipped a chicken liver truffle canape, with onion jam, cocoa nib and choclate crumb.
A divine bread service included mosbolletjie, garlic and rosemary potbrood, whipped butter with Amma’s plat-based cultured cashew butter. This was seasonal bread made using natural leaven available during harvest season, baked on an open flame in a cast iron pot with a beef tallow candle.
Starters featured glazed aubergine, Cape Malay curry pickle, Macadameia nut, pickled dune spinach, cucumber, coriander and mint. And meat eaters were treated to lamb rump, crispy lamb rib, black figs, cider braised onions, confit garlic, bruleed gem squash, shaved courgette and olive salad.
Amabele sorghum biscuit sandwich with bitter orange, banana caramel and Amarula were combined into a mouth-watering dessert. Followed by a Pienaar & Son Ugly Gin digestif.
What started as a symbolic lights-out event has grown into the world’s largest grassroots movement for the environment. Amidst accelerating climate change and staggering biodiversity loss, Earth Hour continues to inspire millions of people to take action for our planet and nature.
