The Cape Chamber Music Collective (CCMC) prides itself on commissioning and premiering new works, and this month they are delighted to premiére One Over Four, a work for piano trio by Matthijs van Dijk.
Van Dijk is a well-known composer, arranger and violinist based in Cape Town. He has written several commissions for chamber ensembles and orchestras such as the Carnegie Hall-affiliated Decoda Ensemble, I Musicanti & Peter Donohoe, the LGT Young Soloists, and the Signum Quartet. Performances have taken place at the West Cork Chamber Music Festival, the Amsterdam String Quartet Biennale, St John’s Smith Square, London, and the Pierre Boulez Saal, Berlin.
A performance of his quartet movement (rage) rage against the has been scheduled at Carnegie Hall for May 2023.

Different experimental sounds
Matthijs describes his piano trio as follows: “Inspired in part by the electronic dance music gestures that worked their way into the piece, the rest of the work was an excuse to experiment with different sounds and effects, the most prominent involving a box of 11 “weasel balls” (a dog/cat toy – an electronic ball with an artificial tail attached to it, that rolls around).”
Van Dijk’s trio is coupled with Beethoven’s Piano Trio No. 7 in B-flat Major, Op. 97, better known as the Archduke Trio. This trio for piano, violin, and cello premiéred in 1814 and was one Beethoven’s final performances as a pianist, due to his increasing deafness.
The subtitle refers to Archduke Rudolf of Austria—Beethoven’s benefactor, student, and friend— to whom Beethoven dedicated the work. It is the last of Beethoven’s piano trios, and it remains one of his best-known chamber works.
The musicians
Cape Town’s much-loved accompanist and chamber musician Tertia Visser is joined by violinist Johanna Roos and cellist Seul Pearl Jung.
Johanna Roos is an inspirational violinist, chamber musician and teacher. She is the recipient of many awards and scholarships and furthered her studies at the Royal College of Music in London.
Seul Pearl Jung is currently pursuing post-graduate studies with Graham du Plessis at UCT and is an ad-hoc player with the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra and an active chamber musician.
The programme will be presented at various venues in and around Cape Town.
