No Friends of Harry, the trailblazing alternative rock band that helped define South Africa’s underground music scene in the 1980s and 1990s, will return to the stage this October 2025 for the first time in 9 years, with a special tour of Johannesburg and Cape Town.

A comprehensive Box Set

The tour coincides with the release of their comprehensive Box Set, a celebration of their enduring legacy and influence. Formed in 1986, No Friends of Harry emerged alongside the first wave of Johannesburg’s alternative clubs, quickly establishing themselves as more than just musicians. They were close friends, united by their passion for the burgeoning alternative scene, determined to create original music that resonated with their generation.

Their 1987 debut LP, One Came Running, reached No.4 on the na7onal charts and catapulted them into the national spotlight. Over the next decade, No Friends of Harry became known for their electrifying live shows, fearless creativity, DIY ethos and groundbreaking performances—such as their audacious 1989 free concert on the steps of the Johannesburg Library.

With hits like Long Way Home, Competion Rules, Some People and Time, which all peaked on the national and alternative charts, and albums ranging from the gothic Into the Valley to the hard rock edge of Fifteen Seconds and bonus compilation Fly by Night and The Present has Passed, the band’s versatility and energy cemented their reputation as one of South Africa’s most iconic acts.

Their surprise stint on the UK live circuit in 1990, including shows at The Marquee and The Rock Garden, further proved their interna7onal stature. Though the band officially bid farewell in 1998 after 13 unforgettable years, their music and influence have never faded. Dubbed The Legendary No Friends of Harry by the press, their story is one of independence, innovation, and inspiration—paving the way for future generations of South African rock musicians.

The upcoming Box Set release will capture the full breadth of their journey, from early gothic anthems to radio hits, offering both longtime fans and new listeners the chance to experience the band’s remarkable evolution. It will include all three of their releases in quality vinyl, as well as a fourth vinyl album containing rarities, live recordings, and previously unreleased tracks. As well as a few other surprises.
