IKIGAI. A triple bill presented by Cape Town City Ballet. At Artscape Theatre, Cape Town. Until 28 August, 2022. BEVERLEY BROMMERT reviews.
This world-class production from Cape Town City Ballet should go a long way to enhance the company’s prestige, both internationally and locally.
It offers rewarding viewing that caters for every taste, from the austere but evocative minimalism of contemporary dance to the traditional elegance and grace of classical ballet.

Well-executed dance
IKIGAI features Ashton’s sublime romp on ice, Les Patineurs, flanked by two outstanding examples of modern works, Fallen Angels (Kilián) and Polarity (Tindall). Taken as a whole, this trio of ballets gratifies all who appreciate the beauty of well-executed dance.
An exceptional contribution to opening night was that of guest artist Tzu-Chao-Chou, whose solo performance in Les Patineurs was notable for its gravity-defying energy.
Equally impressive, though more understated, was CTCB’s Kirstel Paterson, currently in top form.
This company’s emergence from two years of covid-induced lockdown proves that what does not destroy, strengthens: IKIGAI is nothing short of a triumph.
