The South African College of Music (SACM) at the University of Cape Town brings Women’s Month into focus with two concerts dedicated to celebrating remarkable women this August 2023.
UCT Jazz and the UCT Big band will showcase the music and talents of women in jazz, including works for big band by Toshiko Ashiyoki, Mary Lou Williams, SACM alumnus and saxophonist and composer Shannon Mowday, and vocalist Amanda Tiffin.
Guest soloists
Woodwind specialist, Danél Dippenaar will feature as a guest soloist on saxophone, flute and clarinet. Vocalists Abigail Petersen, Amy Campbell and Anathi Mobo appear as guest soloists, and will also perform together with Amanda Tiffin as a vocal ensemble backed by the fabulous UCT Big Band.
Expect an exciting evening full of beautiful music, from samba to South African grooves, and swing to soul. This concert takes place on Tuesday, 15 August at 7pm in the Baxter Concert Hall.
Umoya uthethile
Also back due to popular demand is the African music concert Umoya uthethile (The spirit has spoken) – A musical tribute to Latozi Madosini Mpahleni presented by the UCT Ibuyambo Orchestra, directed by Thabisa Dinga.
If you missed this world class production earlier this year, be sure to get your tickets for Saturday, 26 August at 7pm in the Baxter Concert Hall. The concert recognizes Madosini’s contribution towards preserving Xhosa uhadi and umrhubhe bow music and culture and is a testament to how she has inspired the next generation of musicians and performers.
The orchestra will pay respect to her well-known repertoire, including Uthando Luphelile, one of the most well-known songs from her first album Power to Women. The show is multimedia with a diversity of instruments, dance, singing and acting, celebrating Madosini’s lively character as a storyteller and performer.
