THERESA SMITH says, See You At The Movies!
Films opening October 13, 2017
Set in Hermanus, the adaptation of Zakes Mda’s THE WHALE CALLER opens on the South African circuit today, October 13. Directed by Zola Maseko, this romantic comedy of sorts opens in the seaside town as it is overrun by tourists eager to see the whales.
When the tourists leave, we see the Whale Caller (Sello Maake Ka Ncube) lingering on the shoreline, calling to a whale he names Sharisha on his kelp horn.
The Whale Caller is 107-minutes long, and carries an age restriction of 13 DLS because kids might find the dysfunctional behaviour misleading.
Moving further afield, THE SNOWMAN is a crime thriller set in Norway, based on Jo Nesbo’s seventh entry in the Harry Hole series. Michael Fassbender plays a detective who investigates the disappearance of a woman whose scarf is found tied around a snowman. The 16V age restriction reflects the gory nature of the violence.
UNLOCKED is set in London and is centred on a CIA interrogator Alice Racine (Noomi Rapace) who discovers that the organisation has been compromised. Also starring Orlando Bloom, John Malkovich, Toni Colette and Michael Douglas, the trailer promises lots of action. (16 LV)
SHOT CALLER is a surprise. On the face of it, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau seems an odd choice to play a newly released prison gangster forced to orchestrate a major criminal operation. But he plays neatly on his Game of Thrones good guy/ bad guy baggage. The 18LV age restriction is well deserved though – it is violent.
If you want something a bit more gentle, then check out THE LAST WORD. Shirley MacLaine plays a controlling businesswoman who pays off the local newspaper so she can write her own obituary. She ends up making friends with the journalist who refuses to just believe anything the old woman says. The 13 L age restriction suggests acerbic wit.
