I love Marc Lottering. I love him so much. I would watch him read the classifieds, and I would laugh. And his new show is just the cutest, funniest, whackiest, most charming hour and a half of the best kind of laughing there is.
I generally don’t love stand-up. But when Marc is standing-up there is always an angle. He is usually standing at some angle, or jumping, or slumping, or Vaseline walking (go see the show and you will understand the reference) and I totally love whatever it is that he is doing.
Marc’s style and content is manic, self-deprecating, confessional comedy, and it is so funny, and beautifully observed, and it isn’t horrible, and doesn’t pick on anyone, but it is full of truths. I was either laughing from my belly, or chuckling, or even nodding in agreement for a full 90 minutes.
Marc has arrived. He is exactly, fully where he should be, on that stage, with the years of experience he has gathered, and I am so glad he didn’t listen to his mommy who knew someone at Clicks where he could have gotten a job.
All about love
Marc’s stories are personal, domestic, Cape Town, family, work, friends, dogs, suburbs, social, education, memory (I also remember those Red Hanger sales!), with an edge of political (but not so you’d notice), and everything he says is so very funny.
But mostly, Marc is about love. He is loveable. He exudes love, and everything he speaks about is colored with love. This makes all the difference, and it is why he is loved right back.
Go and laugh, and commiserate, and relate, and feel the love. Thank you Marc, you are the cutest, best stand-up and I love you.
