At 25, GrandWest Sous Chef Mieshkah Solomons has a simmering career on the boil and is set for further kudos in her gastronomic future with an invitation to appear at the Good Food & Wine Show from 2 to 4 June, 2017 alongside Michelin masters, local epicurean talent and celebrity food maestros.
‘Good Food & Wine Show’
She will perform a variety of culinary demonstrations at the Good Food & Wine Show on Friday 2 June 2017 at 3pm and at 12pm on Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 June, 2017.
Solomons has become used to cooking before an audience during her mentorship in the venue’s Corporate Social Investment hospitality projects. She has compiled curriculums and mentored students across 20 schools in the Cape that have benefited from GrandWest’s Consumer Studies classroom upgrade initiative which provides hospitality training for previously disadvantaged students. A whizz in the kitchen and the classroom, Solomons also holds the title of Head of Learning and Development and Head of Health and Safety for Food and Beverage at GrandWest.

An industry which never sleeps
She says: “I am very passionate about both my cooking and my students. I love teaching and mentoring the young students in the Consumer Studies classrooms and I love my role here at GrandWest which serves up opportunities for me to be involved in every aspect of the food and beverage industry. Every day is different. One day we may be serving a buffet or creating set menus and the next day we are hosting banquets for 3 000 people. I thrive on the vibe and energy of an industry which never sleeps. I’m a real people person and I enjoy working with people all the time and I love the pressure.”
Head Chef at GrandWest, Wynand Schoeman, who also sits on the committee of the South African Chefs Association (SACA), nominated Solomons to participate at Good Food & Wine Show.
“She is a great candidate to represent GrandWest. She started out as a junior Chef du Partie at GrandWest and I believe she has potential to do well. I would like to see her doing more demonstrations and getting involved with more culinary competitions. Seeing her work within Sun International’s learnership and development initiatives, teaching theory, doing our video learning demonstrations, as well as getting down to the practical aspects in the kitchen, she has a lot to offer. I see her as one of our rising stars who has both the confidence together with the capability.”
