Ster-Kinekor Throwback Cinema March 2025 programme
First up, releasing on Friday 7 March 2025, is Good Will Hunting. This 1997 classic film won two Oscars: Best Actor in a Supporting Role for Robin Williams and Best Screenplay for Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, and also received a further seven nominations. Matt Damon plays the role of Will Hunting, a janitor at MIT who has a gift for mathematics, but needs help from a psychologist to find direction in his life. Celebrating its 15th anniversary this year is the epic psychological sci-fi thriller, Inception, which will be screened from Friday 14 March 2025. A thief who steals corporate secrets through the use of dream-sharing technology, is given the inverse task of planting an idea into the mind of a CEO. But, his tragic past may doom the project and his team to disaster. Directed by the award-winning Christopher Nolan, the film stars some big Hollywood names including Leonardo DiCaprio, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Elliot Page, Kim Watanabe, Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy, Tom Berenger, Marion Cotillard and Michael Caine.
Releasing on Friday 21 March 2025 is the boyband documentary One Direction: This is Us, which was first released in 2013. With the untimely passing of band member Liam Payne in 2024, the return of this documentary to the big screen is all the more poignant. The film follows Niall, Zayn, Liam, Louis, and Harry’s meteoric rise to fame, from their humble hometown beginnings and competing on the X-Factor, to conquering the world and performing at London’s famed O2 Arena to thousands of screaming fans. This intimate all-access look at life on the road for the global music phenomenon is interwoven with stunning live concert footage, commentary from the boys themselves and a view through their own eyes of what it was like to be One Direction.
Rounding off the list of Throwback Cinema titles for March is the delightful 1995 movie Babe, which celebrates its 30th anniversary this year, and releases from 28 March 2025 at select Ster-Kinekor cinemas. Gentle farmer Arthur Hoggett wins a piglet Babe at a county fair. Narrowly escaping his fate as Christmas dinner, Babe bonds with motherly border collie Fly and discovers that he too can herd sheep. But will the other animals accept him? Directed by Chris Noonan, the film stars James Cromwell, Magda Szubanski and Christine Cavanaugh.
