Potent Jozi outfit, The Muffinz, hit the road. The band’s latest tour started in Bloemfontein and are en route to Durban, KwaZulu-Natal.
Their month-long touring project, The Muffinz On The Road To: Where You Are, includes live gigs and music workshops.
New single ‘Where You Are’
The Muffinz explain: “We are excited about the mini tour and we will be sharing with audiences our take on how The Muffinz sound has evolved to where it is. We will be coming to Where You Are as that is the title of our new single”.
The four piece have five SAMA nominations under their belt and two full length albums. The quartet released their new single Where You Are in February. Written by The Muffinz, the song is produced by Simphiwe Kulla and Geoffrey Tazenda Chitima and mastered by Chris Gehringer at Sterling EQ, who brought artworks from Rihanna, Drake, Sean Paul, Angelique Kidjo and Kesha to life.
“Where You Are speaks about love and decision making. Although we don’t choose who we love, we can choose who we spend more time with or even an eternity with… And the song speaks on the phenomena of “feeling someone”, it’s beyond hearing them, touching them, kissing them, but rather a deeper connection that maintains fidelity transcending space and time to reach wherever the lover may be,” the add.
Ask each member of the band how they define their music and the responses are as varied as their personalities. Former bassist Karabo Moeketsi used to describe the sound as “Hybrid African music on steroids”. For lead electric guitarist Sfiso Atomza Buthelezi ‘liberated Afro-retro” is more fitting a description.
Cosmopolitan soul
“The music is cosmopolitan as is the Johannesburg that The Muffinz is native to”, says Mthabisi Sibanda, a Zimbabwean migrant who found a home in the band as founding member when he Buthelezi sang together in the University of Johannesburg Choir. Lead electric guitarist Simphiwe Simz Kulla terms it “eclectic soul trip”.
