The Rocky Horror Show will run at the Theatre on the Bay from 7 April until 31 May 2026. WeekendSpecial spoke to Jasmine Minter (pictured left), who plays the iconic role of Magenta in the show:
The Rocky Horror Show is back! Are you excited – what thrills you about this production?
A: I am SO excited! I have loved this musical since I was far too young to watch it. In fact, I used to impersonate Tim Curry when I was about 10 years old! But as I grew up and understood the themes, the love grew even more. The message, the songs and the incredibly unique characters are all so enticing. What’s not to love!? The thing that thrills me most about this specific version is that for a lot of us this is our first Rocky ever, but then we have some veterans of the industry with us as well who are on their third Rocky, so I am so excited to learn from them and join the Rocky Horror Hall of Fame.
For the uninitiated, tell us about the Magenta role and how does the role relate to Frank-N-Furter?
A: Magenta is one of the supporting leads in this show. She is one of Frank’s servants and is presented as a subservient maid, but as time goes on, you see that she actually thrives in demented and chaotic situations. She is mysterious, manipulative and sardonic. Magenta and her brother are inseparable, and without giving you any spoilers, let’s just say they are “out of this world”!
What do you love about this character and how have you prepared for it – share a tidbit about your process, if you can?
A: I absolutely love Magenta. She has always been my favourite character, so it really is an honour to be playing her. Because she is such a well known character in this iconic cult-musical, I did a lot of research to try and honour Patricia Quinn, who originated the role. Watching interviews of her, re-watching the movie for the 57th time, and walking around my room talking to myself as her – basically doing my best to include all the different aspects of her. This includes her deep voice, the twisted physicality in her movement and, of course, her Transylvania accent. Finding the joy in her coldness has been such an interesting journey, and it’s just getting started!
If you had to describe yourself in three words, what would they be?
A: Dedicated, distracted and caffeinated.
Do you have a fave song in the show, and why?
A: My favourite song is “I’m Going Home” sung by Frank’n’Furter. It is a beautiful, moving ballad and the moment that we get to see Frank completely stripped back and vulnerable. Whenever I hear it, I immediately picture that shot of Tim Curry wiping the eyeshadow down his face with that blue backdrop. Chills! Now I get to hear it live everyday, and Craig Urbani sings it so beautifully.
And tell us about the dance numbers – are they a riot?
A: They are crazy! One of the amazing draw cards of this musical is that everyone knows and loves the music! And so do we! So you can’t help but give your all when doing something as iconic as the Time Warp! The dancing is super high energy and upbeat. To be honest, I also think I enjoy the dancing 10 times more as Magenta because of her unique-weird style of movement.
If you were a member of the audience, would you dress up? Give us a few suggestions of what to wear!
A: Oh my word, definitely dress up! I feel like it pulls you, the audience, straight into the world of Rocky Horror with us. Whether you just come with a cute feather boa, or whether you come in full Riff Raff cosplay, I love a dress up theme and I will always encourage it. In fact, when I went to go watch the 2019 version at the Artscape, I went dressed up as Magenta! So I guess the message of the show “Don’t dream it, be it!” It became my reality, because now here I am living my dream!
