Further additions to the all-star lineup
Chef Peter Tempelhoff, of The World’s 50 Best Restaurants, FYN, partners with Chef Shin Takagi, of two-star Michelin restaurant Zeniya in Kanazawa, Japan, to offer authentic contemporary Japanese sushi with Sushiya to Time Out Market Cape Town.
Sushiya, meaning ‘sushi shop,’ is a testament to the chefs’ joint commitment to sustainability, high-quality craftsmanship, and authentic ingredients. From small-scale suppliers in Japan, to ethical fishermen in the Western Cape and organic farms from the Cape region, every element of Sushiya’s menu is carefully curated. Notably, the rice used is grown in Shin’s native Ishikawa is nurtured by fourth-generation rice growers and aged for up to two years before being cooked in Cape mountain spring waters.
Sushiya’s menu at Time Out Market Cape Town will comprise a series of small dishes with classic pickled and preserved Japanese-style vegetables, a variety of modern nigiri platters, a platter of maki, and temaki and gunkan maki infused with local and classic Japanese flavours, among other delicacies available for diners to enjoy.
Chefs Tempelhoff and Takagi, both esteemed members of the World Culinary Council for Relais & Châteaux, have nurtured a strong friendship through their culinary endeavours. A testament to their knowledge and skills, Tempelhoff and Takagi’s flagship restaurants – FYN and Zeniya, respectively – both further enjoy an admirable Relais & Châteaux membership. The two came up with the Sushiya concept in the back of a taxi, discussing their love of sushi and the craft behind it, and right there decided to take the plunge and open a restaurant in Cape Town, which Time Out Market Cape Town is proud to be home to.
Indian street food
Chef Hitesh Panchal will introduce Indian street food with a contemporary twist with Kapoochka. An unmissable hidden gem amongst the city’s finest, it brings Indian street food with a contemporary twist to Time Out Market Cape Town, inspired by the street foods found throughout Chef Hitesh Panchal’s home country.
Chef Hitesh is the creative architect of Kapoochka, working alongside his sons Tushar and Hriday, and together they bring this carefully curated street food menu to the Market for all to enjoy.
Their menu highlights pani puri, considered to be the king of street food across India, which is a crispy hollow ball filled with potato, lentils, three chutneys and a spiced water. These puris are best enjoyed thrown into the mouth in one bite, creating a sensation that can only be described as an explosion of flavours. The concept will showcase various meats from the tandoori oven, and the creative minds behind Kapoochka have sworn not to burn anything by design unless it is required to enhance the taste. Furthermore, the exciting menu will also introduce a twist to the savoury puris they are known for, also offering mouth-watering dessert puris.
Bar programme, activations
Not only will the market showcase the city’s top chefs and much-loved restaurateurs, it will also boast local wines, beers, cocktails, mocktails and soft drinks at three bars as well as art and cultural experiences from Capetonian and South African talent.
The market is fully licensed, and the 13 food concepts are complemented by three bars offering premium alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages – keeping with its mission to bring the best of the city together under one roof, the curated beverage programme will include:
- Dry Dock Bar: Located on the ground floor and the heart of the Market with a wide offering of premium beverages that include cocktails, wine, and non-alcoholic drinks.
- Pumphouse Bar: This is where craft beer dreams meet classic favourites. With 12 taps on offer – nine of which are dedicated to local artisanal craft ales – this is the grand assembly of brews.
- Studio Bar: This quintessential cocktail bar is located on the mezzanine level, known as The Time Out Studio which doubles as a cultural event space. Located in the cultural pulse point of the Market, it welcomes anyone with an appetite for ambience.
A curated programme of cultural activations and events will also be offered all year round, including jazz evenings, comedy and DJs. Spread across the Market, guests will be able to enjoy art and installations from the Zabalaza Art Faktory and ALFA.
To select the talent and curated mix showcased at Time Out Market Cape Town, the team has trawled the city in search of the best chefs and restaurateurs, and then invited the very best to join the lineup. This curated selection offers an incredible range of local cuisine and in addition to the just-revealed Sushiya and Kapoochka, the following culinary concepts haven been previously announced: Chef Bertus Basson’s De Vrije Burger; MLILO by Chef Vusi Ndlovu; The Melting Pot Seafood by Chef John Van Zyl; Unframed Ice Cream by Yann Rey; Chef duo Matt Van Den Berg and Carla Schulze with How Bao Now; Peter Tempelhoff’s Ramenhead; Chefs Anwar Abdullatief and Yolani Abrahams’s Barakat; Eugene Smith will bring YARD; and Culture Wine Bar by Chef Manning.
