A RSG Arts Festival commission, Korreltjie Kantel is an Afrikaans music production paying tribute to the love affair, writing relationship and works of poet Ingrid Jonker and novelist Andre P. Brink.

Three distinctly different musicians – Luna Paige, Jamie Jupiter and Nick Turner– have come together to interpret and compose music to Ingrid Jonker poems. These poems are interwoven with musical interpretations of the love letters that passed between Brink and Jonker as published in Flame in the Snow (2015). A poignant and intimate “portrayal of longing, destruction and the fearless delight of love”.

After a successful debut at RSG Arts Festival 2015, and productions at Woordfees and KKNK (2016) and some tailoring and replacements, this interpretation of the love affair between these two writers in the 60’s is finally getting a full album release with a national tour. Leader and producer Luna Paige says: “The material we work with in this show reminds us how powerful love can be… and that it knows no bounds”.

Eve: Women in the garden of song

Luna made her debut in 1999 when she was invited to record with and be a part of Eve: Women in the garden of song. Here she sang alongside 4 other women (including Lesley Rae-Dowling). Since then Luna has released 5 original albums (4 English, 1 Afrikaans) and 2 Afrikaans singles (2016). She has performed at numerous popular arts and music festivals across country. End of 2015 Luna established her own production company with Denise Barnes as her partner. Iluminar Productions has since then developed musical productions Die Ander Konsert (2015), Korreltjie Kantel (2016), Konnexi (2017) and In Her Blues (2017).

Nick Turner was one of the key songwriters Sons of Trout. Nick also formed part of a duo band with Mike Rennie. Their band Mechanic headed to New York. Back in South Africa – he  is involved in the cultural heritage music project Music van de Caab at Solms Delta. He  released his first debut solo album (Home and Secure, 2016) and forms part of music productions Die Ander Konsert and Korreltjie Kantel.

During the 90’s Jamie Jupiter played with The Honeymoon Suites. Nowadays he performs solo, looping rootsy percussion and indigenous instruments with guitar and bass. He won a Fleur du Cap for best cabaret 2009 with the mock country show Angels on Horseback.

The Tour is supported by the Music Mobility Fund, administered by Concerts SA. Additional support by RSG Arts, ClemenGold and Simonsig.
