Slow Life presents trumpeter Darren English Live in Concert at The Olympia, Kalk Bay on Thursday, 20 October 2022 at 8pm. His band includes Shaun Johannes on acoustic bass and Kurt Bowers on drums.
English is a South African-born and raised, US-based artist. He’s a 2020 and 2018 Global Peace Song Award Winner (Jazz category – jury and public voted in LA, California); a 2018 honoree of the Atlanta Georgia GSU 40-UNDER-40 Most Influential & Innovative Award; a two-time recipient of a Fine Music Radio (FMR) Award, plus lots more.
Musical collaborations
To date Darren English has performed and recorded with Grammy® Nominated trumpeter Russell Gunn (Maxwell, Brandford/Wynton Marsalis) with his Krunk Jazz Orkestra, with vocalist Carmen Bradford (Count Basie), as well as with Curtis Harding Soul Power, with Grammy® Award saxophonist Kebbi Williams (Chris ‘daddy’ Dave, Tedeschi Trucks), Greg Tardy, Joe Gransden, Marcus Lewis Big Band, Duffy Jackson, Marcus ‘Jay Master’ Roberts, Dwayne Pate, Dave Matthews, Keith Brown Quartet, Kevin Bales Quartet, Lil’ John Roberts, and Marcello Pellitteri.
He’s also gigged with UK Reggae artist Finley Quaye, UK Pop artist Craig David and US pianist Joe McBride.
He was the featured young artist at the 2015 Sitka Jazz Festival in Alaska USA, featured soloist on Russell Gunn’s record The Sirius Mystery, and featured on the Dave Potter album You Already Know, alongside Wynton Marsalis’ pianist, Marcus ‘Jay Master’ Roberts. His most recent notable performance was with legends Jimmy Heath and Freddy Cole (brother of Nat King Cole).

Darren released his debut album Imagine Nation under Atlanta’s top jazz label, Hot Shoe Records®, which features trumpeters Russell Gunn & Joe Gransden, vocalist Carmen Bradford (Count Basie Orchestra), saxophonist Greg Tardy, pianist Kenny Banks Jr, drummer Chris Burroughs, bassist Billy Thornton and the voice of Nelson Mandela.
