TV series are the new movies, and everybody has their fave shows. We like to ask people what they’re watching, and how they watch, and if they have any confessions to make about their bingeing habits. This week it’s the turn of the talented Weslee Swain Lauder (pictured right).
Lauder is currently taking on multiple roles in the side-splitting gothic comedy The Mystery of Irma Vep at the Theatre on the Bay. The versatile actor is also a director and choreographer who has worked on both stage and screen. He’s got a score of award nominations to his name, and has even done the dance moves for music videos.
We decided to ask him what he watches when he’s not on a stage, or directing somebody on one:
What series are you watching at the moment?
Definitely keeping up with Game of Thrones, but I also just finished The Handmaid’s Tale.
Your comments?
I ADORE fantasy so I am living my best Lannister-Life with Game of Thrones. The Handmaid’s Tale is phenomenal. I really enjoyed it.
So what’s to like?
The Handmaid’s Tale: It’s a magnificent study on female subjugation, religion, politics amongst other things and asks incredibly relevant questions even 30-odd years after the book was published. The colour palette, mood and performances are exquisite.
Game of Thrones: C’maaan!
Do you have any favourite characters, and if so, who are they?
Game of Thrones: Arya Stark – Little BadA**.
The Handmaid’s Tale: Moira – again, a BadA**
Are you a binge-watcher?
I plead the Fifth! Haha, yes I am.
Can you tell us the longest time you’ve spent watching a series without leaving the couch?
I spent an entire weekend watching Rome with my BFF, Reg. Oh wait! I spent almost four days catching up on True Blood.
What are your best snacks/drinks/treats to have while watching a series?
LOVE popcorn and a strong cup of tea. One teaspoon of sugar, leave the tea-bag in.
What do you think has been the mightiest, most excellent series ever made?
That’s a tough one but my top five favourite series’ ever are The Good Wife, Transparent, American Horror Story and The Walking Dead (not in that order though).
Have you ever cancelled a real, live social engagement to stay at home to watch series?
I plead the Fifth again! No, but I’ve certainly been late to some engagements because of series-watching.
