After their epic showcase with Marco Mendoza and The Brother Moves On, Tribes Got Soul returns with an international acoustic line-up – the idea being “Assembling the Good Folk”.
Willy Mason – The Ocean Gets Rough
Willy Mason writes songs and poetry of the American conscience. Hope, disillusion, invention, isolation, humour, celebration and aspiration are all at home in his music. He is currently touring solo and with featured collaborators and instrumentalists.
Mason’s popularity rose after Conor Oberst discovered his music backstage at a Bright Eyes show. Oberst soon signed Mason to his record label, Team Love and released his debut LP. He has since toured with Radiohead, Death Cab For Cutie, Ben Kweller and Unbusted, and played at Glastonbury Festival, South By Southwest, and the Offshore Ale House.
Mason’s debut album Where The Humans Eat and singles (Oxygen, So Long), charted on the UK Singles Chart and Albums Chart in 2005. Mason went on to release The Ocean Gets Rough in 2007. Willy’s new album, Carry On, was recorded in 2011 in South London with producer Dan Carey (MIA, Hot Chip, Franz Ferdinand) and released in 2012.
Yoann Minkoff and Kris Knolly
French guitarist Yoan Minkoff (he’s gigged with City Kay and the Ligerians, and is respected for his blues, reggage, West African guitar style), presents a solo project which unveils his poetic blues marked by West African Mandingue, English pop and North American folk. Yoann is accompanied by Beatboxer Kris Nolly.
The duo is used to playing long sets alternating compositions from Yoann’s album Black & White Blues, unreleased songs and also covers, from Skip James to Jose Gonzales. After having performed around France, Yoann & Kris are now spreading their positive acoustic vibes across the world with unique collaborations.
For the SA show they’ll be joined by Sisanda Myataza recent recipient of the ESP YoungLegends award, plus vocalist and MC Teba Shumba.
Mark Fransman (SA)
Multi instrumentalist Fransman has played with Pahroah Sanders, Hubert Laws, Soweto Kinch, Tony Cedras, Louis Moholo and Finley Quaye. His recent project Sonik Citizen is a ‘song’ inspired entity. Expect a solo blues, folk and soul with a rock feel.
