The Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra is privileged to present one of the world’s leading maestros, Thomas Sanderling, in two performances at the City Hall on 12 and 19 June, 2025.

Violinist Andrey Baronov
The soloist in his first concert will be Andrey Baronov, one of the foremost violinists today, who on a South African concert tour which includes his CPO performance on 12 June in the Brahms Violin Concerto, a recital with pianist Andrey Gugnin for the Cape Town Concert Series at the Baxter Concert Hall with Szymanovski, Shostakovich and Strauss and several concerts in the Stellenbosch International Chamber Music Festival. The second work in the CPO’s all-Brahms programme is the Symphony No. 4.
Son of Kurt Sanderling
Thomas Sanderling, the son of the legendary Kurt Sanderling, has held positions with many orchestras, and relinquished a position in the city of his birth as principal conductor of the Novosibirsk Philharmonic Orchestra after the Russian invasion into Ukraine. He has achieved the highest honours internationally through his recordings and appearances with most major orchestra and with artists such as David Oistrakh, Emil Gilels, Gidon Kremer, Herbert von Karajan, José van Dam, Leonard Bernstein and Natalia Gutman. His special acquaintance with Dmitri Shostakovich led to many recordings and the premieres of the 13th and 14th symphonies in Germany.
Megan-Geoffrey Prins, Tinus Botha
The second CPO concert with Sanderling in the Winter Symphonies at the City Hall season on 19 June includes the Concerto for Two Pianos by Mozart with Megan-Geoffrey Prins and Tinus Botha.
The final concert will be Il Trovatore in concert, conducted by Jeremy Silver with UCT Opera soloists and the Afri-Arts Choir, presented with the generous support of the City of Cape Town.
Pre-concerts talks by Albert Combrink or John Woodland are held before each concert at 18:45, with free entry for concertgoers. No 7.
