Cape Town based vocal band Afro Cadence hits the much-loved Blue Room stage this June the 27 with their debut performance. KEANETSE FOTHOANE reached out to the vocalists to enquire about their preparations for the gig.
How did the group get its name?
We wanted to draw attention to the fact that we are African, which is the Afro part, and cadence in music is often the exclamation at the end of a song. So we are saying we are here to make an impact amongst the artists in the African music scene.
Please describe the ensemble’s singing style
The singing style that we have is what we call contemporary Christian acapella pop jazz, where we take influences from these different styles of music and incorporate it in our singing style. Primarily our style is jazz, but we put heavy emphasis on our vocal harmony. We draw from such notable groups as Take 6, New York Voices, Earth Wind & Fire etc.
Why a quintet of all ensemble formations?
We all come from a vocal harmony background and having 5 voices allows us to explore a wider range of chord structures and harmonies. We wanted to be distinct as well from quartets like Boys II Men and sextets like Take 6, so hopefully we are unique with our 5 gentlemen.
What are the challenges of being a group comprising of 5 members – how are they resolved?
We have known each other for years and have worked together before. There are good dynamics within the group, mutual respect and professionalism that helps to get the job done.
Please share words of encouragement with vocalists aspiring to form a singing group?
Always strive to improve your craft and train your ear to hear not just yourself but the rest of the harmony as well. Find like-minded individuals and work towards your goals together.

What can audiences look forward to in your upcoming performance?
We want the audience to have fun and enjoy the music that we have prepared because we have them in mind when we put it together. There will be something for everyone and every taste. We have some local jazz that has inspired us growing up that we will cover, we have some romantic stuff for the couples who came would have out for a romantic evening and some super bad jazz chords for the avant-garde listener who likes their music theory extra spicy.
