The annual general meeting of the Richard Wagner Society takes place on Sunday, March 26, at 5.30pm, followed by a recital by Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra principal cellist Kristiyan Chernev and pianist François du Toit. Both will be staged at 37 Kingsgate, 301 Beach Road, Sea Point.

The programme comprises sonatas by Brahms and Myaskovsky and, for solo cello, The Fantasy by Hristoskov.

The Bulgarian born Kristiyan Chernev  received his early music training at the Music School in Pleven, Bulgaria, winning several cello competitions both in Bulgaria and elsewhere in Europe including First Prizes at the Cello Competition in Heran and the Provadia Competition in Bulgaria.  In 1990 he moved to France where he completed his degree at the Conservatoire de Boulogne.

Chernev is involved with the CPO’s youth development programmes

Whilst in France he was a member of the Sainte Chapel Chamber Orchestra. In 1994 , he returned to Bulgaria to further his studies at the Music Academy in Sofia, and was appointed principal cello of the New Symphony Orchestra of Sofia, the Sofia Soloists’ Chamber Orchestra and the Pleven Philharmonic. Coming to South Africa, he was co-principal cello of the KZN in 2000 and whilst in Durban also taught. In 2006 he joined the CPO first as co-principal cello and a year later became principal cello. He is actively involved with the CPO’s youth development and education programmes.  He has been cello teacher at the UCT College of Music since 2012 and as an enthusiastic chamber musician regularly performs with the Bacharova String Quartet and has participated in many recordings both for CD’s and film scores.

François du Toit is well known to RWS audiences both as a soloist and accompanist.  He is acknowledged as one of South Africa’s leading concert pianists and musicians and is an Associate Professor of Piano and head of Practical Studies at the University of Cape Town. He performs regularly with the CPO and to celebrate his 50th Birthday was invited to perform all five Beethoven piano concertos for its Summer Festival in 2016.
