A Christmas Carol, Veronica Paeper’s creation of the Charles Dickens tale about the mean-spirited Scrooge will be presented by Cape Town City Ballet at the Artscape Drama Theatre from 8 to 29 December, 2023, featuring Marcel Meyer as Scrooge.
Paeper’s A Christmas Carol premiered in 1982. At that time John Simons made Scrooge so indelibly his own, no one adequately played the part. That is until Paeper dispensed with using a dancer and cast iconic actor Marcel Meyer.

The story
On Christmas Eve the elderly miser and unpleasant old man Ebenezer Scrooge is paid a visit by the Ghost of his dead business partner Joseph Marley, who tells him that three Spirits will call on Scrooge: The Spirit of Christmas Past, The Spirit of Christmas Present and the Spirit of Christmas Future. Marley tells Scrooge that unless he listens well and changes his miserly ways he will be forever condemned to be in chains of damnation.
After their visits, Scrooge is transformed into a kinder, gentler man.
Cape Town City Ballet invites patrons to an experience that uniquely celebrates the message of generosity of spirit being the cornerstones of humanity. In this timeless classic story of the triumph of joy, and the victory of the human spirit over greed, they celebrate joyfulness of children and the magic of the festive season.
