Seven bands from high schools in Cape Town battled it out for the third consecutive year at The DSK Battle of the Bands 2018 at De Waal Park on Sunday 22 April. The German International School Cape Town hosted the event organized by the DSK Arts & Culture Portfolio.
The Collective snagged the floating trophy
Competition was tense as bands from Bishop’s Diocesan College, Camps Bay, Cedarhouse, the German International School Cape Town (DSK), Herzlia and Westerford demonstrated their talent and vied for the prizes on offer. In the end, The Collective walked away with the floating trophy.
City’s diverse music community
“The aim of this annual, free event is to allow young bands to perform in public and be part of the city’s diverse music community while having fun with musicians from other high schools,” explained members of the organising committee. “In future we would like to focus on finding ways of reaching a wider range of schools for their musicians to reach this stage. There is a lot of talent out there that should be heard.”
The audience on this autumn afternoon was treated to fresh, energetic and varied performances from rock to hip hop and jazz. The event was kicked off by last year’s winners, The Juvenile (DSK) and concluded with a guest performance by DSK alumni band Here & Now.
A large group of spectators gathered in De Waal Park. Three high calibre judges had the unenviable task to decide the winners – Simon Atwell from Freshlyground, jazz-lounge vocalist Maya Spector and The Academy of Sound Engineering’s renowned sound engineer and seven time SAMA award-winner Peter Pearlson.

Best Musical Band: The Collective from Bishops Diocesan College, who scored professional sound equipment courtesy of The Academy of Sound Engineering.
Best Original Song: 26th Street from Camps Bay High School won a studio recording and music video by The Academy of Sound Engineering.
Best Group Work: Freshly Baked from Westerford High School walked away with a pizza dinner for the whole band at Da Vinci’s.
Best Image: Identity Theft from Cedarhouse High School are looking forward to haircuts at Eccentric Salon.
Most Promising Musician was Gabriel Dubb from Open Embassy (Herzlia High School) and Most Promising Voice was Tallulah Gray from Identity Theft (Cedarhouse High School), who will both benefit from one month of free lessons from the School of Rock.
The Best Musician award, shared by Benjamin Fisher from The Collective (Bishops) and Jordan Osman from Freshly Baked (Westerford High School) and Best Voice Giulia De Chaud from 26th Street (Camps Bay High School) will enjoy vouchers by Vida e Caffé.
