FanCon Cape Town Comic Con is an annual comic convention held in Cape Town, South Africa. After the very successful inaugural show in 2016, FanCon returns on 29 April – 1 May at the CTICC, bigger and better, with expanded space over a fun-filled three days.

FanCon is South Africa’s first convention that focuses primarily on the comic book industry, in addition to all related pop culture and geek interests, and that brings to our shores international guests who are professionals and renowned for their work in the industry.

Show Highlights

  • International comic book writers and artists, including Eisner Award-winning creators Eric Powell and John Layman, famed for their creator-owned comic series, The Goon and Chew, respectively.

  • Veteran comics writer, Ron Marz.
  • Top Italian comic artist Laura Braga, artist on the cult favourite DC Bombshells.series.
  • Matt Hawkins, President and COO of top US publisher, Top Cow. Fans are encouraged to bring their artwork, as Hawkins will be doing portfolio reviews.
  • Nigerian-based Vortex Inc., one of the fastest growing comics and animation companies in Africa, will be represented by Somto Ajuluchukwu, Founder and Creative Director, and Mike Kayode, Head of Animation.
  • Calssara, award-winning German cosplayer, will be a cosplay judge, panelist, and host. For the first time, a top international cosplayer will be an invited guest at a South African convention. She will be available for meet and greet sessions with fans, including photo opps and having prints autographed.
  • Kinpatsu Cosplay (Tayla Barter), SA’s premier cosplayer, with over 100k followers on her social media platforms and gaining increasing international recognition, will be in attendance.

  • South African guests include best-selling international author and comics writer, Lauren Beukes; comic artist and renowned fine artist, Loyiso Mkize, creator of SA’s only black superhero series, Kwezi; Jason Masters and Sean Izaakse, both local artists who are gaining increasing acclaim working for top comic companies, including DC and Marvel.
  • A jam-packed panel programme of talks, discussions, interviews, workshops and presentations.
  • Artist alley featuring local, national, and international comic creators, where attendees can buy comics, original art, and commission art pieces directly from the artists.
  • Signing sessions with local and international guests, plus comic book launches.
  • Wonder Woman at 75: the world’s first superheroine celebrates her 75th anniversary in 2017 and FanCon honours this landmark with an exhibit of Wonder Woman comics through the decades.
  • Cosplay activities across all three days, including a masquerade, parade, two competitions and a junior competition, meet and greet sessions with cosplay guests, cosplay workshops and panel presentations.
  • Thousands of rands worth of prizes and merchandise to be won by visitors participating in the daily geek quizzes.

  • Dedicated board gaming zone where visitors can indulge in free game play, attend game demos, and test play brand new games with game designers.
