Drummer extraordinaire Frank Paco brings fresh tracks from his latest album, New Horizons as well as work off his previous albums to Kwa Sec, Ny 138 no. 52 in Gugulethu on 5 February 2017. This world jazz artist will be joined by an exciting ensemble consisting of Blake Hellaby on keyboards, saxophonist Buddy Wells and Sean Sanby on bass.
A versatile showman, Frank is a co-founder of Tucan Tucan, Virtual Jazz Reality, Loading Zone and Uhambo (a collaboration of musos from Norway, Denmark, SA, Mozambique.
Born in Mozambique, Frank started playing drums when he was 11 – from drums that were made out of oil canisters – such was the shortage of musical instruments in the war-torn country at the time.
From these humble beginnings, his career has been meteoric and seen him perform with some of the greatest musicians around the world. He has played in the 46664 Mandela AIDS concert, performing with Queen’s Brian May. He has also performed with the likes of Roger Taylor, Bono, Peter Gabriel, Jimmy Cliff and Jonny Clegg.
This Kwa Sec gig, which forms part of the Jazz in the Native Yards’ Summer Jazz Series, is made possible by Concerts SA, a joint South African/Norwegian live music development project housed within the SAMRO Foundation.
