Imbumba Fiesta, which will be staged on Youth Day at Glenwood’s Bulwer Park, Durban, features some great acts. The hot line-up on Saturday 16 June 2018 includes Holly Rey, whose distinctive Afro house sound is a cross-continental blend of Afro tribal, broken beats and jazzy grooves.
Then there’s the beautiful voices of maskandi outfit of Shwi noMtekhala; Kyle Deutsch – former SA Idols contestant; KwaMashu born award-winning gospel powerhouse Hlengiwe Mhlaba; and vocalist Nicky Shange, whose songs range from soulful, African rhythms and jazz.
At Imbumba Fiesta also look out for veteran hip hop DJ Vigilante; plus Bexx – a solo act from Durban performing ‘angsty anti-folk’; Christian/gospel vocalist Simphiwe Mdunge; Kepza – writer / producer and freestyle, hip hop and rap DJ, plus DJ Phelzo a professional house and hip-hop DJ.
Market, open mic at ‘Imbumba Fiesta’
The concert starts at 3pm and ends at 7pm. It’s free.
In addition to the afternoon concert, Imbumba Fiesta has a full morning on offer – a winter themed market, food stalls, info stands and an open mic section.
For Imbumba Fiesta the aspects of the day are: an open market from 9am until 4pm; a Kids Zone all morning from 9am until 2pm; Open Mic stage from 10 until 2pm; on-site library drive to get kids to read, with literary themed events and readings from 11am to 2pm (mobile library, reading marquee); a healthy living promotion from noon until 2pm and a sundowner concert from 3 to 7pm.
Mzala Nxumalo
Imbumba Fiesta is a project of Pietermaritzburg-based Mzala Nxumalo Centre for the Study of South African Society, which promotes the legacy of social activist Mzala Nxumalo by focusing on the question: What does it mean to be a nation? The centre has identified Glenwood as a social microcosm of SA.
Imbumba Fiesta 2018 is hosted by Brithm Productions and supported by the Office of the Premier, eThekwini Municipality, KZNSA Gallery, and more. Colgate are bringing their events truck to the Fiesta – so have a free dental check-up!
The KZNSA Gallery will be open – inviting visitors to visit the gallery, shop, restaurant. And eThekwini Parks and Recreation will support the day with indigenous plants and trees, and staff will share knowledge about indigenous gardening. They also start the day with a park clean up from 8am to 9am.
