Join Iziko South African Museum for a Walkabout with Mining/Earth artist Jeannette Unite on Heritage Day, Saturday 24 September, 2022 at 11am. The event will offer insight into her PLOT: Critical Zones exhibition, which is on view at the gallery until 31 March, 2023.
PLOT: Critical Zones is a unique trans-disciplinary installation which examines human beings’ relationship with minerals that are at the heart of mining, industrialisation, manufacturing and consumption.
Unique paint recipes
The showcase distils the works and research the artist from more than 30 countries. The exhibition highlights how Earth is owned, measured, divided, and allocated by title deeds and legal rights over land and resources.
Unite’s eco-alchemic artworks were created with mined material consisting of oxides, metal salts and residues harvested from extraction, heritage and industrial sites.
These she combined into unique paint, pastel and glass recipes developed with the assistance of paint-chemists and a geo-chemist.
Underpinning it all is a focus on the so-called Critical Zone that encircles Earth, the layer from above the tree tops to below ground water, where melded minerals and water create and support life.
Complex natural habitat
Through an installation of mostly large-scale “bar-code” paintings, Unite spotlights this imperiled environment, calling for collective Earth stewardship to safeguard the degradation of this complex natural habitat.
