The June Ster-Kinekor Throwback Cinema line-up includes a movie classic, a rom com, and one of the scariest psychological horror shows ever. All for a mere 50 bucks per movie!
First up, releasing on 6 June is the timeless classic from the 1960s, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, starring the beautiful classical actress, Audrey Hepburn. She plays the lead role of Holly Golightly, an eccentric New York City playgirl determined to marry a Brazilian millionaire. But when young writer Paul Varjak moves into her apartment building, her past threatens to get in their way. Directed by Blake Edwards, the film also stars George Peppard and Patricia Neal, and won two Oscars for composer Henry Mancini – one for Best Music, Original Song with Johnny Mercer for “Moon River”, and the second for Best Music, Scoring of a Dramatic or Comedy Picture.
If you’ve ever wondered how long it takes to lose a guy, the June Ster-Kinekor Throwback Cinema movie releasing on Friday 13 June (lucky for some?!) is for you! How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days is the 2003 romantic comedy starring Matthew McConaughey, Kate Hudson, Adam Goldbert and Kathryn Hahn, and directed by Donald Petrie. Benjamin Barry is an advertising executive and ladies’ man who, in trying to win a big campaign, makes a bet that he can make a woman fall in love with him in 10 days.
If psychological horror is more your genre, and you haven’t yet watched it, this 1960s classic is for you. Directed by the award-winning master of suspense Alfred Hitchcock, Psycho stars Anthony Perkins, Janet Leigh, Vera Miles and John Gavin. When larcenous real estate clerk Marion Crane goes on the run with a wad of cash and hopes of starting a new life, she ends up at the notorious Bates Motel, where manager Norman Bates cares for his housebound mother. The film releases on 20 June.
Audiences are in for a treat from Friday 27 June with the release of two films that will appeal to very different audiences. The lovable green giant is back in Shrek 2, the animated fairytale first released in 2004. Releasing at all the Throwback Cinema sites except Rosebank Nouveau in Johannesburg, the popular sequel follows Shrek, Fiona, and Donkey as they set off to Far, Far Away to meet Fiona’s mother and father, the Queen and King. But not everyone is happily ever after. Shrek and the King find it difficult to get along, and there’s tension in the marriage. The Fairy Godmother discovers that Fiona has married Shrek instead of her son Prince Charming and plots to destroy their marriage.
At Rosebank Nouveau, from 27 June, film lovers can enjoy a very different kind of love from a very different era, with the screening of the 2005 Pride and Prejudice, based on the much-loved novel by Jane Austen. When Elizabeth Bennet meets the handsome Mr Darcy, she believes he is the last man she could ever marry, but as their lives become intertwined, she finds herself captivated by the man she has sworn to hate forever. The film stars Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen as Elizabeth Bennet and Mr Darcy, with supporting roles played by Brenda Blethyn, Donald Sutherland, Carey Mulligan, Rosamund Pike, Talulah Riley and Jena Malone.
