The Karoo Writers Festival 2018 which takes place in Cradock, Eastern Cape from 19 to 22 July 2018, is to be enhanced this year with a special creative writing course with Jo-Anne Richards, international author who holds a PhD in creative writing and was a lecturer for many years at the University of Witwatersrand.
Jo-Anne’s course will be held on the first day of the festival, 19 July at the Schreiner House – former home of Olive Schreiner and now a NELM museum – at 3pm. She will share her insights on creating character, plot and development as well as discuss her successful novels which are well loved all over the world. The cost is R150 pp and numbers are limited to 15 as Jo-Anne likes to give personal attention to each writer and potential writer.
The Karoo Writers Festival 2018 will take place at venues in Cradock, including the historic Tuishuise and Victoria Manor Hotel, from July 19 to July 22.
The Karoo Writers Festival 2018 line-up
Subjects to be discussed and enjoyed are wide and varied and authors will be bringing their new works to Cradock – from Lukhanyo and Abigail Calata’s My Father died for This to Julienne du Toit and Chris Marais’ Moving to the Platteland – life in small town South Africa.
On June 19, The JA Calata Choir will sing in the Cradock Moederkerk, possibly the most beautiful of Karoo churches.
Martin Welz will speak on 25 years of editing Noseweek magazine, there will be readings from famous Karoo books and authors and publishers will share their knowledge with visitors.
A staged reading of Tony Jackman’s new play, Mein Camp: The Audacious Struggle of Le Clerq Goldberg, will be held at Karoo Brew in Cradock at 7.30pm on Friday 20 July.
This one-actor play is a piece of cabaret theatre in the tradition of the Weimar Republic-era Kabarett of the late 1920s and early 1930s – camp, audacious, and politically irreverent. J Bobs Tshabalala is dramaturge and producer for the play reading, promising “all the things the play would have, only read. Costume. Lights. Props. A presentation towards a full production”. Mein Camp will be read/performed by actor Emil Lars.
The Karoo Writers Festival 2018 is held under the auspices of NELM – The National English Literature Museum.
