Comedian Karou Charou burst onto the scene over eight years ago. And Capetonians will now get a chance to get a taste of his super “Hot & Spicy”.
While many comics play the club scene for a good few years, honing their skills before producing a one man show, Karou launched his career with a one man show.
‘Kama Sutra’
His an adult piece, Kama Sutra, dealt with sex within the Indian community. It premiered with three sold out shows, and went on to sell out a further four shows when it returned a month later by “public demand”. Karou then toured South Africa, selling out wherever he appeared.
His subsequent one man productions Don’t Dalla wid da Masala, Madhir and Kama sutra 2 went on to achieve further sold out successes on the circuit amassing a strong fan base as he went. Karou’s popularity was also recognized by McDonalds, who handpicked him as the face of their Hot & Spicy burger campaign.
‘Adult’ comedian
Karou’s real name is Mahdevan Moodley. Although he’s made his mark as an “adult” comedian he managed to garner a fan base that ranged from kids as young as four to senior citizens. As a result, he worked on a family show and that’s how Hot & Spicy was created.
Karou’s managing agent Sagren Moodley, says that the show will see the “turbaned one” perform some of his best material from his various shows over the past 6 years. Amongst other things, he will reveal “why most Indians can’t swim? Why Indians choose not to play rugby, and how Indians put the “fun” in funerals?”
Interactive style
Note: Moodley adds that Karou has a very interactive style, which means the audience plays a big part in the show. So shy types best choose their seats well! His mental telepathy stunt which involves two audience members, a pack of cards, an egg beater and a blindfold will apparently leave you gob-smacked.
With so many kids expected to attend the show, Karou has a special segment dedicated to them. In the finale segment he’ll experiments with his new-found hypnosis skills and then of course there’s the crowd-pleasing “Cowboy Hoedown”. Hot and spicy is plugged as “a 90-minute roller coaster of non-stop laughter, for the whole family.”
