Babalwa Meintjies sings her own material and jazz standards

Young jazz songbird Babalwa Meintjies finds her groove at Kwa Sec, Ny 138 no. 52 in Gugulethu from 4pm this Sunday, 26 February.

Brace yourself for yet another exhilarating performance which forms part of the Jazz in the Native Yards’ concert series and is supported by Concerts SA, a joint South African/Norwegian live music development project housed within the SAMRO Foundation.

Meintjies is an accomplished young jazz singer, originally from Grahamstown in the Eastern Cape. She studied music at the University of KwaZulu Natal.

She has gigged with the likes of Feya Faku and Sazi Dlamini

Besides being one of the South Africa’s greatest young jazz singers, Meintjies composes her own songs. She has performed with various jazz giants including Feya Faku, as well as well-known musicians of the genre including Neil Gonsalves, Sazi Dlamini, Pakie Peloele and Philani Ngidi.

She has performed at various prestigious jazz gigs including the 2014 Standard Bank Jazz Festival. In 2008 she was invited by both the National Heritage Council and the Embassy of South Africa in Athens, Greece to perform at an annual Heritage Celebration Event.

At Kwa Sec she performs some of her own compositions and popular jazz standards with legendary George Werner (piano). The rest of the band consists of young talent Mpumi Mnyamana (tenor sax), Sean Bratz (bass) and Kurt Bowers (drums).
