Louis Moholo, the only remaining member of The Blue Notes jazz sextet from the 1960s, teams up with Italian pianist Giovanni Guidi on Sunday 22 September 2019 in a concert that forms part of the Jazz in the Native Yards series at Guga S’thebe in Langa, Cape Town. The gig starts at 4pm.

The Giovanni Guidi Cape Town leg of the tour includes performances on Friday 20 September at Youngblood Gallery at 8pm and Saturday 21 September at the Olympia Bakery at 8pm, where he will perform with Jonno Sweetman (drums), Lee Thomson (trumpet), Hein vd Geyn (bass) and Rus Nerwich (sax). And on Sunday 22 September Guidi teams up with drummer Louis Moholo Moholo.

Born in Cape Town, Moholo formed The Blue Notes with Chris McGregor, Johnny Dyani, Nikele Moyake, Mongezi Feza and Dudu Pukwana and immigrated to Europe with them in 1964, eventually settling in London, where he formed part of a South African exile community that made an important contribution to British jazz.
He was a member of the Brotherhood of Breath, a big band comprising several South African exiles and leading musicians of the British free jazz scene in the 1970s and is the founder of Viva la Black and The Dedication Orchestra.
His first album under his own name, Spirits Rejoice on Ogun Records, is considered a classic example of the combination of British and South African players. In the early 1970s, Moholo was also a member of the Afro-rock band Assagai.
He has played with the likes of Derek Bailey, Steve Lacy, Evan Parker, Enrico Rava, Roswell Rudd, Irène Schweizer, Cecil Taylor, John Tchicai, Archie Shepp, Peter Brötzmann, Mike Osborne, Keith Tippett, Elton Dean and Harry Miller.
Moholo returned to South Africa in 2005, performing with George Lewis at the UNYAZI Festival of Electronic Music in Johannesburg. He now goes under the name Louis Moholo-Moholo.
Born in Foligno 1985, Guidi met Enrico Rava during a workshop in Siena. Rava noticed his talent and decided to include him in Rava Under 21 project, that would become Rava New Generation. With this group Guidi has recorded three CDs for the Italian magazine L’Espresso. Guidi has performed in many festivals around the world, and is the recipient of several awards, among many the TOPJAZZ award by Musica Jazz magazine, 2007.
In 2013 he released his first album as leader City of Broken Dreams with the ECM label, recorded in trio with Thomas Morgan and Joao Lobo. Previously he had recorded Tribe and On The Dance Floor, both with Enrico Rava. In November 2018 he toured with the Enrico Rava – Joe Lovano Quintet.
