Magnet Theatre will present a touring production of Tree/Boom/Umthi, and a Family Festival featuring Tree/Boom/Umthi and Stone Play. Both productions are perfectly aimed at pre-school and Grade R audiences.
Tree/Boom/Umthi is a delicate tender performance for 3 to 7-year-olds about the relationship between a man and a tree and the seasons. It was created by Jennie Reznek with the Magnet Theatre Trainees in 2013 with the input of Roberto Frabetti from Theatre Baracca in Bologna (supported by Assitej SA). Using very simple poetic language. Tree/Boom/Umthi tells the story of a man who is hungry and wants to eat a peach. To satisfy his hunger he plants a tree. The tree grows through spring into summer and the man must learn to wait with patience for the peach to ripen. It tells the story of the tree’s journey through the seasons and is performed like a moving illustrated children’s book, with beautiful images using carefully chosen objects, sounds and song. The talented team of young actors are: Ambesiwe Msengana, Bandile Skweyiya, Busisiwe Maphumulo, Lusanda Soboyise, Melusi Molefe, Ntsika Benya, Pretty Sakeni and Simphiwe Sefali.
Early Years play
Stone Play is another thrilling Magnet Theatre Early Years play that has just returned from touring Italy through a grant from Mzansi Golden Economy. Stone Play takes us back to the beginnings of humankind. It traces the beginnings of paint and visual expression – stone, ground into powder, rain to make paint, and finally image.

The Magnet Theatre Family Festival will run at the Magnet Theatre on 12 and 13 December 2023. Tree/Boom/Umthi will have two scheduled performances a day, and Stone Play will be performed on both days in the afternoon.
