VANESSA LEVENSTEIN
2017 is a momentous year for those who love Baroque music. In September, the first Cape Town Baroque Music Festival will take place involving musicians from all over South Africa.
Lutes & Flutes
The Baroque festival is organized by Cape Town’s foremost baroque ensemble, Camerata Tinta Barocca. Erik Dippenaar, Artistic Director and harpsichordist, is confident about this venture. “The time is ripe to have a celebration of Baroque music. This is an opportunity for period performers from across the country and possibly from across the world to come together in Cape Town and share the joy of Baroque music”. The programme will feature both well and lesser known works.
Bon Bons’ festival flavour

Fine Music Radio presenter Anna Stoddard is delighted about the event. Anna’s Baroque Bon Bons is a regular favourite on FMR. From 29 August, Anna will treat her listeners to a series of four Baroque Bon Bons, which will explore the music of the festival. “I applaud Erik for organising this Baroque Music Festival and I know that we are in for a feast of music. The Baroque Bon Bons leading up to this exciting event will provide background and insight into some of the works on the programme”.
Anna’s Baroque Bon Bons can be heard live on Tuesday mornings from 7.15am to 7.20am. You can also listen to the podcasts here.
FMR’s station manager Mark Jennings said, “I’m always amazed at the depth of Anna’s research. She finds these fascinating, quirky gems of knowledge which make Baroque music relevant and engaging to a contemporary audience”.
Time Travel with Camerata Tinta Barocca
It’s apt that the venue for the festival is St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Green Point. The church is home to Camerata Tinta Barocca and the historic building has the acoustics and atmosphere to transport the audience back to the Baroque period. Cape Town audiences can look forward to a Baroque festival of note!
