The season opens on 22 November 2017 with 40 Fingers/40 Vingers. The show celebrates the 40th birthday of the Oude Libertas Theatre’s Steinway piano. Making up the 40 fingers are the eight talented hands of pianists Charl du Plessis, Pieter Grobler, Elna van der Merwe and Albie van Schalkwyk. They will perform never before heard arrangements of exciting music ranging from baroque to boogie and Beethoven to Billie Joel.

The season closes four months later on with Cape Town City Ballet performing Romeo and Juliet from 7 to 10 March, followed by Ike Morris on 11 March.

In between is a robust calendar of song, dance, theatre, ballet, big band jazz, orchestral delights and even Christmas carols. Some of the highlights include Evita Bezuidenhout and her Captured State on 29 November, in which Tannie Evita uses humour as her weapon of mass distraction to look at the past and predict the future in South Africa.

Then there’s the acapella group Just 6, who’ll do vocal interpretations of music by Bob Marley, Hugh Masekele, Michael Jackson, Brenda Fassie and many more, on 2 December.

In Amazing Grace, popular pianist Rocco de Villiers will perform a collection of hymns and spirituals from his best-selling last two albums, providing beautiful songs in a beautiful setting on 3 December.

The fabulous Radio Kalahari Orkes, with actor Ian Roberts, will perform a folk-rock pastiche of Afrikaans Boeremusiek with authentic acoustic instruments such as tin guitar, harmonica, banjo, mandolin, violin and accordion on 8 December.

On 16 and 17 December there’ll be Christmas Carols with Richard Cock, and on New Year’s Eve there’ll be “dance music for oldies”, the programme says.

Other sweet spots include Melanie Scholtz and the Cape Town Tango Ensemble (29 December), Sterling EQ (21 January 2018), the Nuwe Graskoue Trappers doing rieldans on 28 January 2018 and Nataniël: Reign of Shine from 7 to 10 February 2017.
