Launching on 8 August is [IN] APPROPRIATE, a photographic exhibition which features 14 women photographers who take aim at societal and cultural norms in South Africa.

In light of the escalated incidents of violence against women in 2017, [IN] APPROPRIATE is a jolt to the normative conventions which breed a toxic masculinity.  It shines a critical light on the devaluation of women’s lives, and the lack of freedom entrenched by social structures that strip away the authenticity of women, young and old, lesbian and transgender.

The exhibition is a platform for photographers working in different areas of the medium, including press, commercial, fashion and more. The participants are all at varying stages in their career – some have never exhibited in a gallery before, others have internationally acclaimed careers.

The photographers include Tracey Derrick (photograph pictured), Nicky Newman, Jodi Bieber, Hetty Zantman, Thandiwe Msebenzi, Elizabeth Nkoana, Melanie Cleary and Saaiqa.

P H Centre is a young photographic gallery and bookstore dedicated to promoting the work of emerging and established photographers. The centre offers workshops and information related to the medium
