MEGAN FURNISS reviews

The new kid on Cape Town’s food block is Curry Club and the minute I saw their red and yellow e-flyer I was waiting for the opportunity to get them to bring me the curry. Last night presented the chance. I have a silly sore back and I didn’t want to cook. Order-in in front of the TV was what was necessary.
Curry Club is only order-in, without a restaurant. They have a big and varied menu, with quirky names and delicious descriptions. How it works is, you call them, place your order, and they deliver. I like being able to speak to a human on the other end of the line because I am a vegan and I always want to double check that what I am eating has no hidden animal product surprises – that cream sauce needs to be dairy free, and the rice needs to be egg free. I called up yesterday (lines open at 5pm) and had a long chat with a knowledgeable and persuasive Curry Club person, who helped me choose our meal.
Husband man is not vegan, but a KZN curry expert and he chose the Gunpowder Chicken Aloo (all mains come with rice) and a garlic buttery naan. The Bangain Mirchi Ka Salan (eggplant curry) was sold to me as the best vegan option. It did sound delicious from the description – “a succulent aubergine dish steeped in curry leaf, coconut and mustard seed gravy’. We also chose medium hot for our dishes.
The smells of Kerala

The only challenge we had, and it wasn’t ours to experience, was the weekend, the Cape Town Jazz Fest, and crazy Cape Town traffic so we had to wait slightly longer for our delivery. But it was so, so worth it. Our order was tracked and an email sent about progress. I did love how my name got Starbucks mangleation and I was called Megon Suniss. I think that’s my Facebook quiz ninja name.
When our curry was delivered by the sweetest delivery man he brought with him the smells of Kerala in the bag. Neither of us were disappointed. My deep red, aromatic and very hot curry was so rich in colour and flavour, but surprisingly fresh and light too. Husband man, who doesn’t lavish words of praise on things, was suitably impressed with his warm and powerful chicken curry.
Curry Club is not cheap street curry. It is a delicious meal with special flavours. These guys know what they are doing. I am just sad I don’t have any leftovers for breakfast.
