Rumours of Fleetwood Mac: ReviewRUMOURS OF FLEETWOOD MAC TRIBUTE SHOW. The Drama Factory.

MEGAN CHORITZ reviews

Just before lockdown I went to a rehearsal of Rumours of Fleetwood Mac. I remember leaving the rehearsal with an enormous smile on my face and I was surprised. Second only to musicals in terms of my least favourite live performances is tribute shows. But even in a casual rehearsal room I could see that this show was going to be different.

Then lockdown happened and all bookings for the upcoming show were cancelled. Slowly, things have been opening up, and Rumours of Fleetwood Mac have been performing sold out shows in and around Cape Town and Stellies, so last night I took a drive out to The Drama Factory in Somerset West to check them out.

The Drama Factory seated about 70 people in the Covid-spaced-out, but gorgeous venue (which I imagine can hold almost 200 in normal conditions). Yes, the audience was of a certain (my) age, and yes we all got down, even if it was in our seat bubbles.

Honouring the genius music of Fleetwood Mac

What I love about this tribute is that it is a no fuss, no frills, solidly brilliant honouring of the genius music of Fleetwood Mac. This band is tight, and the music is superb. Nobody is ‘pretending’ to be Fleetwood Mac here, but just playing the much loved and incredibly well-known music beautifully.

Skye Wilson, on acoustic guitar and lead vocals, is incredible. I have not seen or heard someone hand themselves over to the music in such an ego-free way. She makes it her own, without ever making it about her. It is wonderful and very special. Greg Schoeman on lead guitar is so, so good and his solo breaks are incredible. The rest of the band; Wendy van Rensburg on keyboard and vocals, Anthony Kinsey on base and vocals, and Malcolm Cassisa on drums, are all terrific – tight, comfortable, expert and just so on it.

The two sets are well constructed, and they flew by in an instant. During every song I thought that was my favourite. If you are a Fleetwood Mac fan you will love this show, and if you want to hear them for the first time (if you are that young) this is a seriously good introduction.
