In It, a band of young musicians who are studying music at UCT’s Collage of Music, bring their fresh jazzy vibes to The Native Yards Series at Kwa Sec, NY 138 no. 52, Gugulethu this Sunday 25 June from 4pm.
Cultural music history
Formed in late 2016, “the initial concept which produced the idea of the collective was the need for young musicians to play original music, as well as draw on the cultural music histories which surrounded them”, says bass player Shakeel Sohail-Gibran Cullis.
The band comprises of Cullis, Thembelihle Dunjana on piano, drummer and percussionist Tefo Mahola and saxophonist Ofentse Moshwetsi. They currently perform and around the local music scene on different professional stages.
The South African sound
“The bands focus is to highlight the musical histories of Southern Africa with specific focus on jazz and the South African sound, in order to explore and develop it for ourselves,” explains Sohail-Gibran Cullis.
The band’s repertoire can be described as a blend of iconic South African jazz drawing influences from artists such as Bheki Mseleku, Moses Taiwa Molelekwa, Winston Mankuku, Abdullah Ibrahim, Kyle Shepherd, Nduduzo Makhathini and Hugh Masekela. On Sunday they’ll perform original tracks and some South African jazz standards.
