Pop artist Alex Hamilton is staging a solo exhibition dubbed Viva Punk Diva from Friday, 23 June from 5pm to 8.30pm, and on Saturday, 24 June 2017 9am to 1pm.

The showcase is at his Alex Hamilton Studio Gallery in Woodstock, Cape Town.

Working class meets extreme anti-glamour

“Punk rock originated 40 years ago as a result of anger, anti-establishment and the passion to stand against state, god and corporate corruption. The punk aesthetic grew from a ‘working class meets extreme anti-glamour” drive and quickly spiralled over into all aspects of popular culture,” says Hamilton.

“Several punk queens were born and many punk groupies eventually became the icons of an era, a distinct look and much “photocopied” ephemeral reference.”

Obvious anger at the world

“Personally I think that a revival of punk, in spirit, is necessary today to shake up our obvious anger at the world. Viva Punk Diva is a tribute and style concept forecast. Mixing the punk aesthetic into a contemporary pop art expression”, he adds.

Alex Hamilton has curated US Woordfees Visual Art Program from 2016 in Stellenbosch.
