A number of artworks by established and emerging contemporary South African artists will lead the Siyakhula Michaelis Auction. The auction takes place at the Michaelis School of Fine Art and features works by Penny Siopis, Athi-Patra Ruga, Jane Alexander and William Kentridge, amongst others.

This initiative is driven by Berni Searle, who is currently director of the University of Cape Town’s art school. Funds raised by the auction go towards scholarships for promising students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
‘Together we grow’
In this way, established artists will pave the way for the next generation, living up to the title Siyakhula, which in isiXhosa means ‘together we grow’. The Michaelis School of Fine Art counts established artists such as Nandipha Mntambo, Lisa Brice and Marlene Dumas amongst its graduates, demonstrating how life-changing this scholarship could be for a young artist.
Artists with proven records at auctions – Sue Williamson, Deborah Bell and Georgina Gratrix – will feature in the Siyakhula Michaelis Auction, alongside those who have never tested this territory, such as new comers Bronwyn Katz, Buhlebezwe Siwani and Siwa Mgoboza. This will set new records for these artists.
Aspire Art Auctions
Aspire Art Auctions will conduct a live auction in the Hiddingh Hall at the Michaelis School of Fine Art on 17 October, 2018. An online auction will take place on Aspire’s website prior to that date.
