The Cape Town Music Academy (CTMA) will present four productions at the US Woordfees in Stellenbosch between 1 and 9 March 2019.

Musiek en Liriek 40 Jaar Later with Anton Goosen, Valiant Swart and Zolani Mahola promises to be a highlight, plus Kwathi ke Kaloku (Once Upon a Time) now brings Xhosa storytelling for children to the US Woordfees.

Babalwe Mentjies and The Little Giants in Jazz in Kayamandi will also be a treat for jazz lovers. Add to that night jazz sessions at Jazz in the Quad with Steve Newman, Kyle Shepherd, Ramon Alexander, Schalk Joubert and a fresh DJ line-up from the Future Nostalgia Outfit, and the stage is set for a festive time.

Musiek en Liriek 40 Jaar Later

With Anton Goosen, Jannie du Toit, Zolani Mahola, Valiant Swart, Sima Mashazi, Herman Kleinhans, Laurinda Hofmeyr and Churchill Naude. Musical Director: Schalk Joubert. Musicians are Schalk Joubert, Mauritz Lotz, Kevin Gibson and Melissa van der Spuy.

The Musiek and Liriek movement in Afrikaans music originated in 1979. Goosen was the first artist that released an album in Afrikaans in which he wrote all the lyrics and music. Expect hits from those years –  Kruidjie-roer-my-nie, Kinders van die wind, Toemaar die donkerman and Liedjie vir jou.

Jazz in the Quad: Kalahari Connection.

With Alistair Andrews (guitar), Bongani Sotshononda (marimba), Lungiswa Plaaitjies (vocals), Ivan Bell (drums) and George Werner (piano).
Kalahari Connection combine African, Indian, Chinese, jazz, rock and classical music using chinese bamboo flute, African bows, flutes, percussion and marimba and bass ukulele.

With Kyle Shepherd (piano), Buddy Wells (sax) and Claude cozens (bass).
Shepherd made a huge impression with his debut as a film score composer for the film Noem My Skollie.

Jazz in the Quad: Ramon Alexander and band.

With Ramon Alexander (piano), Zeke Le Grange (sax), Bradley Prince (guitar), Chadleigh Gowar (bass) and Annemie Nel (drums). Alexander has two albums to his credit – Picnic at Kontiki (2011) and Echoes from Louwskloof (2015). In 2018 Cape Jazz Piano was released by Mountain Records. The album also features Ibrahim Khalil Shihab, Hilton Schilder and Kyle Shepherd.

Jazz in the Quad: Schalk Joubert & band feat Sima Mashazi.

With Schalk Joubert (bass), Mauritz Lotz (guitar), Kevin Gibson (drums), Ramon Alexander (piano) and Sima Mashazi (vocals). Schalk Joubert has worked with The Crash Test Dummies, Hugh Masekela and more. a huge variety South Africa’s most prominent musicians for more than 20 years.

Kwathi ke Kaloku (Children’s storytelling in Xhosa)

With Sindiwe Magona, Thami Baba, Awethu Hleli, Bongani Sotshononda (marimba, kalimba, vocals), Henry Jeane (kora, mbira, kudu horns, shekere) and Sisonke Godlo (drums, shakers).
A celebration of Xhosa children’s literature and indigenous music by award-winning author Sindiwe Magona, and Bongani Sotshononda’s United Nations of Africa. In Kwathi ke Kaloku Magona and the cast perform a combination of two of her well-known children’s tales, The best meal ever! and Stronger than lion.
