An array of young poets, musicians and dancers feature on the Cape Cultural Collective’s youth programme this month. Voices of The New Generation takes place on Friday 30 June at Cornerstone Institute, 127 Cecil Road, Salt River at 7pm. The event is part of Cornerstone’s Winter School for Creatives, which takes place that week.
The line-up includes Mixed Mense and Emile YX, poets Kim Windvogel and Irma Titus, jazz singer Sisanda, the Junior Rosa Choir, the fusion band Sabu’s Azanian Solution, American jazz singer Alexis Morrast and rappers, Luke Marchant, Chadwin Nel and Thulani Nahum.

Dance moves, relevant lyrics
Mixed Mense includes legendary Emile Jansen – who collaborates with young rappers in an energetic exposition of dance moves and socially relevant lyrics.
Siyabulela Jiyana, the leader of Azanian Solution, has travelled the world performing with his former band Abavuki. He has now embarked on a solo career, combining traditional African and Western instruments, with the former given prominence.
Sisanda is the ESP young legend who performed at the CT International Jazz Festival earlier this year. In 2015, she travelled to the UK to do a recording, an offering in which she sings the only known Xhosa version of Autumn Leaves.

Choir members aged 10 to 14
The Junior Rosa Choir, a project of the Cape Cultural Collective, consists of 20 young people who sing in English, Afrikaans and Xhosa. Members are aged 10 to 14 and come from Langa, Manenberg, Kalksteenfontein and Nyanga.
Alexis Morrast is a 16-year-old jazz singer from the US won a major talent competition earlier this year, stunning the huge audience and MC Steve Harvey with her powerful voice. The Jazz Institute at Rutgers-Newark is sponsoring Alexis’ trip to South Africa.
Kim Windvogel is a writer and gender activist from Cape Town. She is a co-founder of the Femmeprojects which empowers youth through the arts and interactive learning. Irma Titus is a journalist and ‘artivist’ who is active in social justice projects.
There will be food on sale. The event will be livestreamed so that people outside of Cape Town are able to watch the programme. The MCs for the event are singer/actress Thami Baba and poet Profound Ndabezitha. Entrance is free, but donations welcome.
“We are thrilled at the amazing line-up and the fact that we are partnering with Cornerstone Institute, a dynamic organisation of higher learning that shares our values of inclusivity, empowerment and development, “said CCC Steering Committee member Kay Jaffer.
Cornerstone CEO Noel Daniels said the participation of the CCC in the Winter School programme would add value to the week’s activities. “The Winter School will include workshops, talks by experts in different fields of endeavour, exhibitions, a focus on movie making and a Youth Celebration on 1 July at Cornerstone’s campus,” he said.
The CCC celebrates its tenth anniversary this year and has an impressive list of projects under its belt. The Collective works closely with a range of communities and is expanding significantly this year.
