There’s nothing better than frolicking in the sea with your furry companion, but not all spaces are dog-friendly. Find our 5 Best Beaches for Dogs in Cape Town (in no particular order):

Windmill Beach | False Bay
A hidden gem which is (thankfully) overlooked by the loads of tourist buses going to Boulders Beach, just nearby, for the penguins. Windmill is just as picturesque, with a smallish beach and secluded pools to paddle in. There are loads of smooth granite rocks to clamber over and explore, and natural shade in the form of a few trees. It’s also mostly sheltered from the wind. Take note: Dogs need to be leashed on the path down to the beach, but after that they can roam free.

Glencairn Beach | FalseBay
Just a hop and skip over the railway line and you’re on the white sands of Glencairn Beach. This small bay is naturally enclosed by rocks at each end, with a gently sloping gradient into the sea. On most days (except when the South Easter howls) the colour of the ocean is the most incredible turquoise, making you feel like you’re on a tropical island. A safe, friendly zone with great swimming for you and your pooches. Take note: There is a large tidal pool on the Simon’s Town side, but dogs are not allowed in this area.

Lagoon Beach | Milnerton
Where the Milnerton lagoon meets the Atlantic ocean it creates a sandy, gentle curve that leads to a wide open beach just perfect for a good doggie work out. You can walk or run for quite a way, with one of the most photographed views of Table Mountain as the backdrop. Lagoon Beach is great for pounding into the waves after a ball, but also safe for dogs who may be a little nervous of big waves- they can pootle around in the lagoon shallows.
Hout Bay Beach | Hout Bay
The middle section of Hout Bay Beach is open to dogs, where they can work up a sweat on the sand. It’s mostly flat, so ball games are fun, and the sea is also mostly smooth, which is lovely for a post-game swim. The surrounding mountain, harbour and cliff views are spectacular. Just stay away from Mariner’s Wharf on the one end and the more busy beach section (near the start of Chapman’s Peak Drive) on the other.

Witsands Beach | Melkbosstrand
Witsands Beach is also great for extended walks with your dog on a long, long stretch of sand. The sea can be quite wild here, and it’s fun to watch the surfers battle big swells. If you need to stretch your dog’s legs (and your own), then walking here is a good idea. Also, the beach is lined with dog-friendly restaurants, so you can always take a rest to refresh yourselves.
There are other beaches that allow restricted use by dogs. Have a look at the Cape Town City Council Beach Zones for Dogs and Horses.
