Cape Camino Cape Peninsula winelands pilgrimage
Traversing the Cape Winelands

Inspired by the ancient pilgrimage across the north of Spain, Camino de Santiago, the South African equivalent is the Cape Camino – a walking pilgrimage route around the Cape Peninsula.

A pilgrimage is a time and space for you to connect with yourself, nature or whatever your belief systems may be. It’s a time of introspection and self-reflection and the organizers invite you to ‘Walk Your Way’ on this scenic journey.

The route is approximately 200km in length (and expanding) and is hosted by our diverse sacred spaces. The route winds its way through winelands, along beaches, through Fynbos thickets and neighbourhoods, supporting micro business and bringing new opportunities to locals on the route.

The course embraces the city of Cape Town in the North, Cape Point in the South, and crosses over at Constantia Nek. It is divided into 7 legs (and a few extensions in between) of approx. 20 km each, for ease of digestion and understanding.

How to Walk

There are 2 ways to participate. The first is to purchase a passport on their website for R380. With this, you receive discounts/value-adds from listed service providers along the route, so you are able to make your way affordably. You also receive maps, so you can plan and navigate your own way.

They encourage local Capetonians to use this method so that they can do their Camino in bits and pieces as they make the time. In other words you don’t have to have a full week free before you join Cape Camino.

The route is organic and as locals join so the route expands and grows and they invite all Capetonians to be part of its development. Purchasing your Passport gives you citizenship.

The second is you book a package at www.capecamino.co.za and they arrange all the logistics – so you can get on with your journey. Packages range in length of days, accommodation types and are either self-guided, guided or a combination of both. Guides are available without a package too, for safety and navigational purposes.

They are currently running a competition for a free 5-day Cape Camino experience in May, 2017, inclusive of accommodation, breakfast and other goodies. To enter, Like their Facebook Page @capecamino, share the post, and tag a friend in the comment section.
