Virginia Davids, presently Associate Professor of Vocal Studies at South African College of Music (SACM), launched her successful professional singing career in 1988 as Aida with Capab Opera.
After further study in Europe she sang not only in Vienna, in 1995 Davids performed Beethoven’s Choral Symphony with the London Philharmonic Orchestra.
South Africa’s new democratic government tempted Davids to remain permanently here, where she gained acclaim as a Divine Diva, picked up numerous awards as well as involving herself as trainer of the Community of Faith Church Choir, directing ComArt Choristers and directing the annual Community Festival of Carols in Elsies River.
Nurtured the finest operatic voices
Drawing on her personal professional singing experiences, as a lecturer/teacher Davids has nurtured some of our country’s finest operatic voices. These include Pretty Yende, Given Nkosi, Magdalene Minnaar, and Robin Botha – young singers already gracing the stages of La Scala, The Met and Covent Garden.
On Sunday, 6 August at 3pm four of Davids current crop of students will appear in concert at Christ Church, Constantia. The talent Davids showcases are sopranos Frances du Plessis and Brittany Smith; mezzo soprano Ane Pretorius; tenor Keanan Mitchell and bass baritone Darryn Kenned. Presently these young professionals are rehearsing for roles in Rossini’s La Cenerentola. While Du Plessis and Smith are sharing the role of Pamina in The Magic Flute.
For the Christ Church concert, accompanied by Danie Theron, the quartet will perform arias and ensembles from operas by Verdi Rossini, Bellini as well as a few lighter pieces from musicals.
