Indulge in crispy Flammkuchen for a great wine tasting experience from the new wood-fired oven at Constantia Glen.
Headsup: A South German, or French-style “tarte flambée”, Flammkuchen is a thin, crisp base layered with crème fraîche and a variety of delicious toppings.
Originating in the wine district of Alsace, bakers would test the heat of their wood-fired bread ovens with a bit of flat dough, resulting in a crispy baked, ultra-thin base. Keeping the European heritage of the Waibel family, who acquired Constantia Glen in the late 1950s alive, the tasting room now offers four mouth-watering Flammkuchen options.
Served hot from the oven
Served daily, hot from the oven at their tasting room, you will be spoilt for choice. Opt for Classic topped with Alpen Speck, leeks, red onions & chives; Caprese with Buffalo mozzarella, slow roasted tomatoes & basil; Slow Roasted Lamb with roasted tomatoes, peppadew, feta & rocket; or Smoked Trout with red onions, dill, caper berries & salmon caviar. Each of these options can be paired with one of Constantia Glen’s elegant, Bordeaux-style wines to enjoy while taking in the wonderful vineyard views from the tasting room.
Bordeaux-style red and white wines
If you prefer to kick-start your day a bit earlier, Constantia Glen now offers a new Breakfast Croissant with scrambled egg and a choice of Alpen Speck or Smoked Trout served daily until noon. And for something sweet after your wine tasting, try the new dessert offerings of creamy Don Pedro, rich Crème brûlée or the luxurious Chocolate fondant.
The Flammkuchen is served from 12 noon, starting at R150. Desserts are R60 each and the new Breakfast Croissant is available at R80. Wines by the glass from R50.
Known for exceptional cool climate Bordeaux-style red and white wines, Constantia Glen is open from Sunday to Thursday from 10am to 5pm, and on Fridays and Saturdays from 10am to 8pm. Look out for the Constantia Glen signs towards the top of Constantia Main Road.
