The Fine Music Radio Coastal Cleanup 2018 will be at Milnerton Lagoon Beach, and volunteers are extremely welcome!
Fine Music Radio and Plastics SA are organising their fourth Coastal Cleanup. This year’s Coastal Cleanup will be at Milnerton Lagoon Beach on 15 September 2018 at 10am. With every item of plastic picked up, that’s one piece less adding to the 51 trillion pieces of microplastic in our ocean.
Professor Peter Ryan, Director of the FitzPatrick Institute of African Ornithology, explains the benefits of the cleanup at Milnerton beach: “The main advantage of cleanups is they reduce the mass of plastic before it breaks up into microplastics – once it is in tiny fragments, it is almost impossible to address. Milnerton is close to the mouth of Rietvlei (Milnerton Lagoon) as well as the Black River and the storm drains that wash all central Cape Town’s street litter into the sea. As a result, Table Bay has lots more plastic litter than adjacent coastal waters”.
Team FMR
FMR’s Station Manager Mark Jennings, believes it is vital that as a community radio station FMR is committed to environmental issues. A keen yachtsman, Jennings spends a considerable amount of time in the water and said: “There is a stark dichotomy between the beauty of the coastline and the wasteland of plastic that carpets it. The plastic will not go away unless we physically remove it and we are grateful that FMR listeners are always keen to help.”
John Kieser, Sustainability Manager of Plastics SA concurs, “The issue of plastics in the environment has never been as obvious as it is at present. Gratefully, this is met by a society that wants to stop the material finding its way to the sea by rethinking their plastics’ footprint and supporting recycling of the material.”
