Following the success of last year’s Coastal Cleanup on Robben Island, Fine Music Radio and Plastics SA are preparing to once again make a difference. This year’s Coastal Cleanup is at Hout Bay beach on Saturday 16 September at 10am.
Hout Bay
With no dangerous currents, Hout Bay beach used to be one of the safest swimming areas in the peninsula. Amongst other factors, the bustling activity next to the coastline has contributed to the abundance of plastic and waste debris. With approximately 5000 Cape Fur Seals living nearby on Duiker Island, the pollution is problematic.
Active citizenship
According to FMR’s Station Manager, Mark Jennings, it’s kudos to FMR listeners: “The last two Coastal Cleanups have proven the active citizenship of our listeners. They care about the environment and are prepared to make a difference! We are confident that the Hout Bay Coastal Cleanup will make an impact on this coastline”.
John Kieser, Sustainability Manager of Plastics SA concurs: “Hout Bay beach has been under the microscope for a long period due to waste from the harbour finding its way to the beach and as a favourite tourist visit site it always needs a cleanup.”
Seal the deal
There is space for 150 volunteers. Plastics SA will provide protective gloves and refuse bags. Refreshments will be served courtesy of Pick n Pay. The station needs to know how many people will be joining the cleanup for both catering and equipment purposes.
