Violinist Jackey Masekela fronts his quartet at a Jazz in the Native Yards and Concerts SA gig themed around the ‘classical meets jazz’ concept on 31 March 2019 at Kwa Sec, NY 138, in Gugulethu Cape Town from 4pm.
Masekela started playing the violin in 1991 at the Diepkloof Community Hall in Soweto. He was first taught by Kolwane Mantu and later moved to Rosemary Nalden with the Buskaid Soweto String Project.
His debut single, titled Banna le Basadi, was released in May 2017 and is available on iTunes, Spotify, Amazon and Google Play. His upcoming solo debut album is due for release later in 2019.
Jackey Masekela formed the 3M-Sobathathu group which comprised violin, clarinet and guitar. Other bands he founded included The Tshwarang Jazz Band, which participated in the Puisano jazz programme run by the Department of Arts and Culture.
He was instrumental in the forming of the Buskaid Soweto String Project and has travelled to Sweden for the Falun Folk Festival with the Kwela Tebza group, and the UK, France and Ireland with the Buskaid Soweto String Project.
Jackey Masekela also performed for former president Nelson Mandela numerous times – at his home and at the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund events. To date he has recorded four albums with the Buskaid Soweto String Project and appears regularly at Champagne festivals hosted by JBI Management and Javekin. He’s also gigged at various Tshwane University of Technology events.
