Comedy duo Westley Cockrell and Stuart Cairns perform two shows in June and July – one in Cape Town (The Book Detectives) and one at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown (The Plothole).
The Book Detectives stars the duo at The Alexander Bar in Cape Town on 12 and 13 June at 9pm. It’s a comedy-filled adventure set in Fairytale Land. The production features two quirky detectives who take you through the underbelly of a world featuring all your favourite – and not so favourite – fairytale characters; all the while trying to solve one of the most mysterious police cases ever to devastate a land created on make believe.
Spend an hour participating in bizarre car chases, witnessing intense interrogations, and listening-in on cryptic phone calls.
‘The Plothole’
Cockrell and Cairns also stage The Plothole at The National Arts Festival at Albany Cabaret Club in Grahamstown on 29 and 30 June, 1, 5, 6, 7 and 8 July, 2017
The Plothole, directed by Van Vuuren, brings to life the trials and tribulations they have faced while pursuing careers in stand-up comedy. From keeping a day job to chasing the impossible dream of impressing their parents, these two oddballs will have you laughing at their expense.
Westley’s comedic journey
Westley has braved a move from an office job to stand-up comedy.
With a certificate in web and graphic design, Cockrell first worked as a sound engineer where he was inspired by friends and family to become a comedian due to his humorous trash-talk paired with his entertaining body language. With a career in comedy still fresh in his mind, he won the Muizenberg Comedy Challenge in 2014 and then went on to win the Joke Slam in 2015. The proverbial comedy bug had bitten.
“Being on stage for the first time I felt like Eminem in the beginning of the movie 8 Mile,” says Cockrell. If that’s not emotive, who knows what is…
“Being a comedian is a lot of hard work,” says Cockrell “And it hasn’t always been easy for me but I’m passionate about what I do, so I push through every obstacle that comes my way; and gladly so!”
A self-confessed shy guy, Cockrell admits that his cat is his life, and he misses it terribly when he’s travelling. Now you know!
