Sebastian Masuda: ‘Time After Time’Japanese Kawaii pop culture icon and artist Sebastian Masuda will bring Kawaii Culture to Cape Town. Sebastian Masuda, in collaboration with the Office of Consul of Japan in Cape Town will host the Time after Time Capsule Workshop and Lecture on Sunday 26 November at 11am to 3.30pm at the V & A Waterfront Amphitheatre.

The achievements of Sebastian Masuda include the rise of Japanese pop-star Kyary Pamyu Pamyu, the princess of Kawaii, whose videos have received over 66 million views on YouTube.

“Kawaii”, which means cute in Japanese, has become a popular word around the world. The word holds a lot of meaning and history, and has given rise to a pop culture genre which was started in Harajuku, Tokyo.

Masuda will talk about his work, and give insight into Kawaii culture which is inspired by “a childlike sense of wonder”. A highlight of this event will be his Time Capsule activity, part of a global project which will culminate at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. The audience will be invited to write letters to their future self, decorate them with “Kawaii” decorations and place them into a time capsule, which will join the other time capsules from Sebastian’s Time Capsule events around the world and be released at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
